Welcome to the TWC Clusters
Geographic Information System (GIS)
This tool has been designed primarily to spatially display businesses by
NAICS-coded industries that comprise the Governors Competitive Clusters. For a
broader view, users can also display businesses organized around the TWC/LMCI
Industry Sectors concept. Because every industry is classified discretely in
one of the 18 Industry Sectors, the later approach also facilitates the mapping
of employers from any industry. Other data layers included on the map include
childcare facilities, Texas Workforce Center offices, and postsecondary
training providers.
Those experienced with GIS tools know that the loading of maps and the
graphical display of data require considerable computing resources. Please be
patient when executing a command! Depending on the number of employers in your
selection, some operations may take slightly longer than you may be accustomed.
It may take a little while to adapt to the various tools but your skill should
grow quickly with use. The sliding tool bar that opens and closes on the left
side of the software allows access to the selection of Clusters, Sectors and
Map Layers, along with a Report feature. This determines what goes on the map.
The icons on the bottom left side let you manipulate the map itself. To see
what functions each icon activates simply move your mouse cursor over the icon
to read the description.
The "zoom in" icon represented by the “plus” sign magnifying glass is for
moving closer into the map. After pressing this button, you will need to create
a “box” on the map by holding down the left button on your mouse and dragging
it from the upper left to lower right. The map redraws to the borders of the
box you drew. Try it a few times and it should become second nature for you.
Similarly, the "zoom out" icon is for enlarging the area shown on the map.
After pressing this icon and clicking a location on the map, the map will
redraw further out with that location (where you clicked) as the new center
point. The icon with an “i” in the center is to view information behind each
map point of the layer you selected. Click on the “i” icon and then click on
the map point to view details.
Please let us know how this GIS application works for you and what added
features or map layers you’d find useful. Happy Mapping!
